*****(I want to clarify that this is not a Jim slam post. I love Jim as a character. I’ve been rp-ing stuff between him and different characters with my best friend for weeks and I’ve had the time of my life doing it. He’s awesome. My problem isn’t Jim himself, it’s just that I wish people would humanize him in the fandom)
1) Chiefly, that don is the more ‘threatening’ or ‘intimidating’ of the two. Jim is the least threatening person ever lol in fact, my nickname for him is ‘muppet’. And it doesn’t matter what you do or what you say, the way in which you hold yourself or conduct yourself (be it in a strong/intimidating way or very approachable way) tends to frame how people judge our actions. Which is sad. But I think both Don and Jim are victims of that. Jim gets less respect/authority than Don, while Don is labeled ‘the asshole’.
2) Don is a news producer, not at a local level, at the national level. He has to be more authoritative and more aggressive or else it doesn’t work because no one will respect that he can stand his ground in a room so full of ego no one can breathe. And I think a lot of people take that setting for granted.
3) Don is more mature than Jim in a lot of ways, especially socially (although let’s be honest, no one on the show is exceedingly mature lol except maybe Neal or Sloan) and I think that makes Jim seem more of a nice guy because he’s easier for people to relate to, which I guess sort of goes back to the approachable/intimidating thing.
4) Jim is cuter than Don. And I hate to say that lol Because first of all it shouldn’t be relevant and second of all I find Don more attractive. But Jim is cuter, in the puppy underdog kind of way. His hair is silly, his sweaters look like they were picked out by his mom and his eyes are big and lovable and cute. And it’s hard to see a cute puppy as an asshole, even if when he’s peeing on your carpet and chewing your shoes lol It’s also hard to learn not to be annoyed by the collie that barks a lot and is too smart and gives you an attitude. But the puppy will eventually grow up and the collie is who keeps the sheep in line, and those things have to be accounted for.
